BMI

Frequently asked questions

How is BMI calculated?

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². In imperial units it is 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)². This tool does the unit conversion for you.

What do the categories mean?

The standard adult ranges are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 normal, 25–29.9 overweight, and 30 or above obese.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

BMI is a rough screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, so it can misclassify very muscular or older people. Treat it as one data point and consult a professional for health decisions.

Is my data stored?

No — it is calculated in your browser and never uploaded or saved.
