Everything is end-to-end encrypted by default using the open, independently analyzed Signal Protocol, which Signal has extended with post-quantum cryptography (PQXDH in 2023 and the Sparse Post-Quantum Ratchet in October 2025). It is open source, run by a U.S. nonprofit funded by donations rather than ads, collects essentially no metadata, and has proven in response to real grand-jury subpoenas that it can only produce an account's creation date and last-connection time. The main caveats are that it requires a phone number to register and runs on central servers, so connection-level metadata (and the fact that you use Signal) is more exposed than in a serverless design.

For everyday convenience Telegram is reasonably safe, but as a private messenger it is weak by default: regular cloud chats are not end-to-end encrypted, so Telegram's servers (in Dubai, under a British Virgin Islands entity) can technically read and store them, and group chats and channels can never be E2EE. True end-to-end encryption exists only in opt-in one-to-one Secret Chats, which most users never enable and which don't work on desktop or sync across devices. Telegram's home-grown MTProto protocol has been repeatedly criticized by cryptographers for being non-standard and has never had a full independent audit of its live system. Since a September 2024 privacy-policy change, Telegram will disclose a suspect's IP address and phone number to law enforcement on a valid court order, and its own transparency reports show a sharp increase in fulfilled requests. Bottom line: fine for casual or public communication, but not a strong choice if your threat model includes the platform operator, server compromise, or legal compulsion — use Secret Chats at minimum, or a default-E2EE app for sensitive conversations.

It is open source and was independently audited by Quarkslab in 2021. The honest caveats: the protocol that ships today still lacks Perfect Forward Secrecy and deniability (so a compromised long-term key could, in principle, expose past messages), and the post-quantum (ML-KEM) and PFS upgrades announced in December 2025 as 'Protocol V2' are not yet deployed. Its IP-hiding network is Session's own onion network, not Tor. For users whose top priority is unlinkable identity and IP anonymity, Session is a strong, reasonable choice; users who specifically need forward secrecy today should weigh that gap.
